Why solar in Liberia
Grid power is limited and diesel is costly
Most organisations here rely on their own generators. Solar with battery storage lets you run the generator less and keep critical equipment on when the grid drops.
About 33%
of Liberians had access to electricity in 2025, according to government figures.
91%
of Liberian firms owned a generator in 2025, up from 73% in 2017.
$0.22/kWh
LEC commercial tariff for January 2026 to December 2028, plus a fixed monthly charge.
$6.55/gal
retail diesel price in Liberia in April 2026, up from $4.31 in June 2025.
Our estimate, not a quote: at $6.55 a gallon (about $1.73 a litre), and assuming a small generator produces 3 to 3.5 kWh per litre, fuel alone costs roughly $0.50 to $0.58 per kWh before servicing and repairs. That is more than twice the LEC commercial tariff. Actual costs depend on your generator, its load and how well it is maintained.
Import duty relief: Executive Order 168 suspends import tariffs on listed off-grid solar and renewable energy products for one year from 1 September 2026. GST, customs user fees and the ECOWAS levy still apply, and importers must be registered with the Liberia Business Registry and the Rural and Renewable Energy Agency (RREA).
